LoJack® System Helps North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles License and Theft Recover Stolen BMW 650i Convertible

The owner of a 2006 BMW 650i contacted the Newport News Police Department to report that the vehicle was stolen from a parking lot of a commercial business in the 600 block of 79th Street. The vehicle had been left in the parking lot the previous night and on the owner’s return, the vehicle was discovered missing and a set of keys was unexplainably missing.
The Newport News Police Department verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the BMW.
The next morning a North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicle License and Theft Inspector was on his way to his district office in Fayetteville, NC to start a new work day. As the Inspector drove into the city from the northeast, his patrol vehicle picked up the silent LoJack® homing signals from the stolen BMW with the LoJack® Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft. Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the Inspector tracked the stolen vehicle off Ramsey Street to an area near the TC Berrien Elementary School. The vehicle had been abandoned and no one witnessed the BMW being driven or parked. No apparent damage had been caused to the BMW during the approximately 230 mile trip south to Fayetteville. The BMW was towed and stored until the owner can arrange travel to Fayetteville or arrange for the vehicle to be towed back to Newport News.
The LoJack®System was installed in the BMW 650i in June 2008.
