This case involves a 2014 Ford F-150 that was stolen from its owner’s apartment complex and recovered in the parking lot of another complex. The thief had backed the truck into a spot and removed the front license plate, a tactic that would hamper a visual search but didn’t stop the LoJack® system, which was concealed inside the pickup. No matter what changes are made to a vehicle externally, the hidden LoJack unit, when activated by a stolen vehicle report, gives off a silent signal that assists law enforcement in locating the machine quickly.

On May 11th, 2014, the Ford’s owner contacted the Houston Police Department. Officers verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers. This procedure automatically activated the LoJack device concealed in the F-150, which was installed at Lone Star Ford in Houston, TX.

A short while later, officers from the Houston PD picked up the silent homing signals from the stolen pickup on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. The officers located the Ford at an apartment complex on Crestmont Street, where it was backed into a parking space and unoccupied. The front license plate had been removed to avoid identification. After a brief surveillance, the F-150, valued at $35,500, was retrieved and soon returned to its relieved owner.
