The owner of a 2000 Dodge Ram contacted the Albuquerque Police Department to report their vehicle as stolen.  The Albuquerque PD verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers, which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Dodge Ram.

Shortly after the activation, an off-duty deputy with the Valencia County Sheriff’s Office picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Dodge with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft.  The deputy picked up the LoJack signal in the area of Interstate 25 and Rio Bravo.  This information was forwarded to the New Mexico Auto Theft Task Force (New Mexico State Police and Albuquerque PD Auto Theft Units).

The ATTF members entered the area and took over the tracking.  Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the ATTF determined the Dodge pickup was mobile.  Covert surveillance was established until additional ATTF members and marked units could respond to the area.  The Dodge was traveling westbound along Central, old Route 66, and after passing 98th Street the Dodge exited the roadway.  The Dodge went along a few dirt trails in the open space area where it did not negotiate an arroyo and got stuck.  The four occupants of the stolen Dodge elected to exit the vehicle and take off on foot.  Their off road adventure was abruptly ended when the ATTF moved in and made contact with them.  All four subjects were safely taken into custody without incident.

The stolen Dodge was processed for evidence and found to have a broken ignition.  The driver was using a screwdriver to bypass the ignition to start the engine.  The Dodge was recovered and towed from the scene.  This is the second time this Dodge has been reported stolen and recovered by law enforcement via LoJack.

The LoJack® System was installed in the Dodge Ram in December 1999 at AutoNation Dodge in Irving, Texas.
