The
owner of two Ford F250 pickup trucks contacted the Providence, RI Police
Department to report that their vehicles had been stolen. Both vehicles were
short-term rental vehicles, which were reported stolen after they were not
returned and the renters did not respond to phone attempts to contact them. The
Providence Police Department verified the thefts and entered the vehicles information into the state and
federal crime computers, which automatically activated the LoJack® System, concealed in the vehicles.
A short while vehicle the Providence Police picked up the silent LoJack signal from the
stolen Ford with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed
in patrol vehicles and aircraft. The
vehicle was also tracked by the Massachusetts State Police and the Rhode Island
State Police. The vehicle was tracked by
the Rhode Island trooper to a commercial parking lot and the unoccupied vehicle
was recovered. The second vehicle was
also entered into the system and the Providence Police began to pick up that
signal as well. It was also picked up by
Johnston, RI Police Department and the Johnston Police Department tracked the
vehicle to an address in Johnston and recovered the unoccupied vehicle. The first vehicle was recovered in one hour
and twenty-four minutes from entry to recovery.
The second vehicle was recovered even quicker, it was recovered in
fifty-nine minutes from the time of entry to recovery.
The LoJack® System was installed in both of the Ford F250’s in April 2016 as commercial installations.
