The owner of a 2007 Volvo S40 contacted the Bernalillo Police Department to report their vehicle was stolen.  The victim advised the Volvo was stolen from her son by his “so-called” friend.  The Bernalillo PD verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Volvo.

Shortly after the activation, the New Mexico Auto Theft Task Force, members from the New Mexico State Police and Albuquerque Police Department Auto Theft Units picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Volvo with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in their undercover vehicles.  Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the ATTF tracked the LoJack signal to the area of Interstate 40 and Tramway.

The Volvo was located in a parking lot and went mobile as the ATTF entered the area.  The ATTF conducted covert surveillance while utilizing LoJack, following the Volvo into the area of Chelwood Park and Copper. The stolen Volvo stopped and two subjects were observed inside it. Both suspects were taken into custody.  One subject was found to have two active warrants for his arrest; absconding and robbery.  The offender was found to have in his possession a bb gun that looked like a realistic firearm.

The Volvo was recovered and the owner was notified of the recovery.  The offenders were arrested and booked for auto theft related charges.  Neither offender was identified as the “so-called” friend who initially stole the Volvo.

The LoJack® System was installed in the Volvo S40 in October 2006 at AutoNation Volvo in Irvine, California.
