The owner of a 2001 Volvo S40 contacted the Albuquerque Police Department to report the vehicle was stolen.  The owner advised there was possibly a spare key inside of the Volvo.  The Albuquerque PD verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Volvo.

Approximately an hour after the activation, officers with the New Mexico State Police picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Volvo with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in their marked units.  The officer was traveling eastbound on State Road 122 in the area of Grants, observed the Volvo and confirmed its stolen vehicle status.  The officer initiated a traffic stop with the Volvo and it pulled over in the area of Milan.  As the officer approached the Volvo on foot, the driver refused to exit the vehicle and took off in the Volvo.

The weather conditions did not allow the driver of the stolen Volvo to get away as it was raining and the roadway was wet.  The driver lost control of the Volvo, exited the roadway and came to stop along the dirt shoulder.  The driver obviously did not want to be captured and decided to run away on foot from the Volvo.  The officer gave chase and apprehended the offender.

The Volvo was recovered and towed from the scene for safekeeping.  The offender was arrested and booked for auto theft related charges, Driving While Intoxicated and Aggravated Fleeing a Law Enforcement Officer.

The LoJack® System was installed in the Volvo S40 in April 2001 via Direct Sales in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
