The owner of a 2008 Ford F250 parked their truck at the mall. When they returned, they discovered the Ford missing. They contacted the Miami-Dade Police Department to report their Ford stolen. The responding officer prepared a stolen vehicle report, theft affidavit and had the vehicle’s information entered into the state and federal crime information computers, which automatically activates the LoJack® System concealed in the Ford.

Later that evening, while on routine patrol, a Miami-Dade Police Department officer picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen F250 on their on-board LoJack Police Tracking Computer (PTC), that are installed in law enforcement patrol vehicles and aircraft. The officer began tracking the stolen Ford by following the directional and audible cues on their PTC’s screen. The officer, along with their backup, located the pickup truck’s signal emanating from the rear of a house in the 12700 block of SW 183rd Street. The officer requested that the department’s aviation unit do a “fly by” of the property. The MDPD aviation unit arrived and confirmed that there was a vehicle in the rear of the property that matched the description of the stolen Ford.

The MDPD Hammocks auto theft unit responded to the scene to facilitate the issuance of a search warrant for the property. The officer and detectives made every effort to make contact with the occupants of the house including loudspeakers and sirens. That was met with negative results. After several hours of surveillance, an occupant of the home in question exited the house for a smoke break, whereupon the detectives made contact with them. The occupant gave written consent to search the property, whereupon the detectives located the stolen Ford in question along with parts of other vehicles. The occupant was arrest for Grand Theft Auto and ultimately transported to the Dade County Jail. The truck was recovered, removed from state and federal crime information computer systems by the entering agency and towed to the police impound yard for safekeeping.

The LoJack® System was installed in the 2008 Ford F250 in April 2007 at Maroone Ford of Miami in Florida.
