The owners of a 2016 Honda Civic contacted the Detroit Police Department to report that their vehicle was stolen from their driveway overnight.

The Detroit PD verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Honda.

A short while later, officers from the Taylor Police Department picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Honda with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft. Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the officers determined that the Honda was mobile. The stolen Honda was tracked to a parking lot of a large retail store in Taylor.

The stolen Honda was unoccupied but it appeared that it had just pulled up. The officers were aware that the store has surveillance cameras throughout the parking lot and inside. Some of the officers went to the security office of the store while others maintained surveillance of the stolen Honda. The officers observed surveillance video and were able to view four suspects exit the stolen Honda and enter the store. They further observed the suspects shoplifting liquor and other items inside the store. In order to better control the suspects’ actions, the officers allowed them to exit the store and enter the Honda. Once inside the Honda all four were safely arrested before they could drive away.

The stolen Honda had no damage, was impounded and later returned to the owners. The owners told the officers that they were happy that they had a LoJack® System installed when they purchased their Honda and would have it installed on any future vehicle purchases. All four suspects were charged with several felony crimes.

The LoJack® System was installed in the Honda Civic in October 2016 at LaFontaine Toyota in Dearborn, Michigan.
