The owner of a 2016 Honda Odyssey contacted the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office, Greensboro, North Carolina, to report that her vehicle was stolen from the driveway of her residence. The Guilford County SO verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Honda Odyssey.

Stolen Vehicle Recovery and Arrests Made

After the activation, officers with the Greensboro Police Department were notified of the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Honda. Officers were led to the parking lot of a big box store by a unit that is equipped with a LoJack Police Tracking Computer (PTC). Upon locating the stolen Honda, the officers located a female in the front passenger seat and detained her until deputies and investigators with the Guilford County SO could arrive on scene. During the initial on scene investigation, the female suspect informed the investigators that she was waiting on her boyfriend, who works at the store, to get off work. The deputies went inside the store to verify her story, where they took the second suspect into custody for further investigation. The investigators transported the two suspects to the Sheriff’s Office for an interview. During the interviews, both suspects confessed to stealing and driving the victim’s Honda. The suspects informed the investigators that their vehicle had mechanical problems and needed transportation to and from work. The suspects told the investigators that they began walking around the neighborhoods near the store pulling on car doors. When they came to the victim’s residence, they found the Honda unlocked and a key fob in the glove compartment. The suspects advised the investigators that they intended to bring the victim’s Honda back once their car was repaired. After the interview and subsequent confession, both suspects were charged with Auto Theft and the Honda was returned to the owner.

The investigator contacted the victim and it was determined that the victim had the primary key fob in her possession but was unaware of a second key fob that came with the Honda when it was purchased last year. With the secondary key fob being in the glove compartment, the Honda would not lock even though the victim was locking her car with the primary key fob in her possession.

The LoJack® System was installed in the Honda Odyssey in May 2016 at Crown Honda in Greensboro, North Carolina.
