The owner of a 2004 Toyota Solara called the Albuquerque Police Department to report the vehicle was stolen. The victim advised that a male subject pointed a handgun and demanded the Toyota. The victim complied and the offender took off in the Toyota. The Albuquerque PD verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Toyota.
Shortly after the activation, officers with the Albuquerque PD and New Mexico State Police picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Toyota with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in their patrol vehicles and aircraft. The Albuquerque PD Auto Theft Detectives also picked up the LoJack signal and took over in following the carjacked Toyota. The Auto Theft Detectives also requested assistance from the Albuquerque PD Air-5 and Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office Metro-1 to assist in the surveillance. Knowing the offender was armed no chances were taken during this surveillance.
The surveillance paid off resulting in the offender parking the stolen Toyota and getting out on foot. The Auto Theft Detectives and patrol officers converged on the offender and took him into custody without incident. The Toyota was recovered and will be returned to owner.
The LoJack® System was installed in the Toyota Solara in November 2004 at Toyota of Plano in Texas.
