The owner of a 2016 Mazda CX-5 called the Albuquerque Police Department to report the vehicle was stolen from the area of Alexander and Renaissance in the Valley Area Command. The owner of the Mazda had stopped to purchase some items before heading out of town to go camping. When they returned to their Mazda they found it to be missing. The Albuquerque PD verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Mazda.

Within just a few minutes after the activation, flight officers with the Albuquerque PD, flying in Air5, picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Mazda with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in their patrol vehicles and aircraft. Following the audible and directional cues from the PTC, the flight officers tracked the Mazda to the area of I-25 and Comanche. During this same time, an officer with the New Mexico State Police picked up the LoJack signal and tracked the stolen Mazda to a gas station in the area of Comanche and I-25. As the officer pulled into the parking lot the driver of the stolen Mazda sped off. Rather than engaging in a risky pursuit the officer relayed the information and started to track the Mazda via LoJack.

An Albuquerque PD officer picked up the LoJack signal and began tracking from the ground locating the Mazda at a fast food restaurant in the area of Montano and Culture. The Mazda was parked in a parking stall at which time the officer waited for additional units to arrive into the area. The NMSP officer arrived and assisted in approaching the Mazda and verified it was unoccupied.

The Mazda was recovered and processed for evidence at the recovery scene. The owner was notified of the recovery but had already left town for their camping trip. The Mazda was subsequently towed from the scene for safekeeping until it could be returned to the owner.

The LoJack® System was installed in the Mazda CX-5 in March 2016 at University Mazda and Volkswagen in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
