The owners of a 2008 BMW 328 contacted the Palm Springs Police Department to report that their vehicle was stolen by unknown suspects. Officers verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the BMW 328.

A short while later officers from the Los Angeles Police Department Central Division picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen BMW with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft. Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the officers tracked the BMW to the area of Sunset Blvd and Alvarado Street where they observed the vehicle. They began following the BMW requesting assistance from an airship and additional units. When the airship arrived, they attempted to stop the BMW and a slow pursuit ensued. Eventually the BMW stopped in front of the 1400 block where the suspect was taken into custody without further incident. During the field investigation the suspect admitted he had found a set of keys in a parking lot in Palm Springs, hit the remote and located the BMW. He then admitted he had driven the BMW from Palm Springs to Los Angeles. Apparently one of the officers located three plastic packets of what appeared to be methamphetamine. At this point the suspect stopped talking. He was arrested and booked for the theft of the BMW as well as possession of a controlled substance and numerous traffic violations.

The LoJack® System was installed in the 2008 BMW 328 in April 2011 at Penske Mercedes in West Covina, California.
