In September 2016, an individual purchased a 2016 Ram 3500 Pick-Up Truck from Thornton Road Chrysler, Dodge Jeep, and Ram in Lithia Springs, Ga. After several months of non-payment and the inability to verify documents, the dealership reported what they believed to be a Fraudulent Vehicle Purchase, to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Douglasville, Ga. Further investigation by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division, determined that the purchaser of the Ram Truck had submitted fictitious documents when purchasing the vehicle and obtained the 2016 Ram Truck through fraudulent means. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Ram Truck.

In February 2017, Pilots with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Aviation Unit, where on patrol when they picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Ram Truck with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC’s) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft. Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the Spotter in the Aviation Unit located the truck and guided the Officers on the ground to make the recovery. When the ground Officers located the stolen Ram Truck, an individual advised the Officers that he was the owner of the Truck. He informed the Officers that he purchased the Truck off of Craig’s List and produced a Bill of Sale as well as a photo copy of the North Carolina Driver’s License of the person he claimed he purchased the Truck from. The Officers collected the Bill of Sale and photo copied North Carolina Driver’s License, as evidence, and recovered the Ram Truck. The Truck was towed by a tow company of the victim’s choosing. The Investigating Officer with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has developed a possible suspect and this continues to be an ongoing investigation.

The LoJack® System was installed in the Ram Truck in April 2016 at Thornton Road Chrysler, Dodge Jeep, and Ram in Lithia Springs, Ga.
