The owner of a 2016 Land Rover Range Rover loaned their SUV to their roommate. The roommate was to return the Land Rover approximately a week later. A couple of days before the roommate was to return the Land Rover the owner attempted to contact the roommate, but was unable to make contact. The roommate moved out, changed their phone number and blocked the owner on all forms of social media with the roommate. Several mutual friends advised the owner that they had seen the former roommate driving their Land Rover around town. Now that it’s a month after the roommate was supposed to return the Land Rover the owner contacted the South Miami Police Department to report the vehicle stolen. The responding officer prepared a stolen vehicle report, theft affidavit and had the vehicle’s information entered into the state and federal crime information computers.

Shortly thereafter, while on routine patrol, a Miami-Dade Police Department Robbery Intervention Detail detective picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Range Rover on their on-board LoJack Police Tracking Computer (PTC). The detective began tracking the stolen Range Rover by following the directional and audible cues on the PTC screen. The detective, along with their backup, located the sport utility vehicle and performed a “felon stop” on it near NW 103rd Street and NW 7th Avenue. The occupant was arrested for Grand Theft Auto. The SUV was recovered, towed to the police impound yard for safekeeping, and removed from state and federal crime information computer systems.

The LoJack® System was installed in the 2016 Land Rover Range Rover in June 2016 at Land Rover Fort Lauderdale in Pompano Beach, Florida.
