A customer of an equipment rental company reported the theft of a 2011 Bobcat Skid Steer to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. The customer reported that the Bobcat was chained up prior to leaving the construction site and was stolen during the night. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg PD verified the theft and entered the construction equipment’s information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Bobcat.
A day after the theft was reported, the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Bobcat was picked up and tracked with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC’s) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft. Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the signal led to a wooded area near the scene of the theft. It appeared to the officer that the Bobcat had been driven into the woods to conceal it from detection to allow the suspects to return at a later date with a truck and trailer to complete the theft. The Bobcat was processed for forensic evidence, recovered and returned to the customer.
The LoJack® System was installed in the Bobcat Skid Steer in April 2011 via Commercial Sales.
