The owner/dealership of a 2016 Dodge Durango contacted the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Industry Station to report that their vehicle was embezzled by a known suspect. Apparently the suspect entered into an agreement to purchase a new Dodge Durango but had not given certain documents to show he had an income. The suspect was allowed to take the Dodge home to pick up the documents however failed to return. Deputies verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Dodge Durango.
Detectives from the LASD Industry station contacted the dealership and learned they had attempted several times to have the suspect return the Dodge but the suspect always had excuses. Detectives began searching the last known address and located the Dodge parked and unoccupied. Utilizing an LASD Air Ship who was tracking via LoJack, the suspect returned to the Dodge and drove off. The detectives followed the Dodge and as the LASD Pico units arrived the deputies affected a felony traffic stop taking the suspect into custody without further incident.
The undamaged Dodge was later returned to the dealership; the suspect was arrested and later charged with vehicle theft by Embezzlement.
The LoJack® System was installed in the Dodge Durango in April 2016 as a part of a Pre-Install Program utilized by dealerships.
