LoJack® System Helps Philadelphia Police Department Recover a Stolen Toyota 4Runner

The owner of a 2008 Toyota 4Runner awoke to discover that unknown person(s) did break into her residence through the front door by breaking off the door knob. Once inside, the perpetrator(s) removed the complainant’s laptop and car keys from a table. The complainant checked outside and discovered that her Toyota 4Runner was also missing. The complainant called 911 and the Philadelphia Police Department Radio dispatched a uniformed officer to investigate. The officer quickly arrived on location, interviewed the complainant and surveyed the area for the Toyota. When the Toyota could not be located, the officer prepared a burglary report and notified the Philadelphia PD Northwest Detective Division. A detective was assigned to the investigation and the stolen vehicle information was entered into the local, state and federal police computer system. This entry automatically notified the LoJack® System thus generating a LoJack activation signal broadcast from the LoJack tower network.

A short while later a Philadelphia PD Truck Enforcement Officer was in the area and conducting an unrelated investigation. The highly trained officer picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Toyota with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft.  Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the officer tracked the signal to the area of Montana Street in Philadelphia. The officer observed the parked Toyota and cautiously approached same. The officer discovered that the Toyota was unoccupied and notified the Philadelphia PD Radio of the situation. The Philadelphia PD Tow Squad was notified and a police tow truck was dispatched to confiscate the Toyota and take same to the Tow Squad HQ where the vehicle will be processed for physical evidence and ultimately returned to the owner.

This incident remains under investigation by the members of the Philadelphia PD Northwest Detective Division.

The LoJack® System was installed in the Toyota 4Runner in December 2011 at Champion Toyota in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
