The owners of a 2006 Land Rover Range Rover contacted the Columbus Police Department to report that their vehicle was stolen overnight from their driveway.

The Columbus PD verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Land Rover.

A short while later troopers and investigators from a Columbus area auto theft task force picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Land Rover with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft. Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the task force tracked the Land Rover to a business area of Columbus.

The stolen Land Rover was parked and contained several occupants. Surveillance was established until marked cruisers arrived. All four occupants were removed from the stolen Land Rover. Two loaded firearms were located in the stolen Land Rover. One of the occupants had a felony warrant and another had just been released on unrelated weapons charges. Investigators believed that they were going to use the Land Rover to commit additional crimes.

Because of the quick recovery the suspects were unable to strip the Land Rover or use it to commit additional crimes. The stolen Land Rover was impounded for processing and later returned to the owner. This matter is to be further investigated by the Ohio State Highway Patrol Vehicle Theft Unit.
The LoJack® System was installed in the Land Rover Range Rover in December 2005 at Hennessy Land Rover in Atlanta, Georgia.
