The owners of a 2011 John Deere 35d mini-excavator contacted the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department to report that their machine was stolen as a result of a known rental customer’s failure to return rental property.  The customer/suspect from Belmont, North Carolina, had rented the equipment, paid monthly rental cost and now failed to pay charges or return the equipment.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg PD verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the John Deere mini-excavator.

A short while later officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg PD’s patrol and aviation units picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen John Deere with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft.  Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the officers tracked the machine to 2000 block of Hastings Drive, to an active residential construction site.

Officers stood by until the rental company made arrangements for their staff and the transport vehicle to arrive to take custody.  An investigation continues to determine if there are criminal elements sufficient to charge the customer/suspect or if civil court will be the owner’s course of action for reimbursement.

The LoJack® System was installed in the John Deere 35d in September 2011 as a Commercial / Direct Sales install for the rental company.
