The owner of a Honda CBR600 motorcycle contacted the Kern County Sheriff’s Department to report that his motorcycle had been stolen from in front of his residence. The Kern County SD verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Honda.

About 10 minutes after being entered into the stolen vehicle system, the flight crew of Air One, a Kern County SD helicopter, picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Honda with the LoJack Police Tracking Computer (PTC) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft.  Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the flight crew tracked the signal to a mobile home park near Freeway 99 and Gulf Avenue in north Bakersfield. Ground units responded to the area and after a brief search, located the motorcycle next to a mobile home in the complex. Officers made contact with four adult suspects, three males and a female who were all detained. In the course of their investigation, the deputies discovered a second motorcycle on the property that had its Vehicle Identification Number ground off. One of the male suspects claimed both motorcycles were his, that he had bought them and had paperwork to prove it; unfortunately he could not produce anything.

In the end it was determined that the suspect, who claimed the motorcycles, was a convicted felon, on probation and subject to search and seizure. A search of his residence produced two loaded firearms, drugs and drug paraphernalia. All of the suspects were arrested for drug violations; one also had an outstanding warrant. The primary suspect was arrested for vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, drugs and drug paraphernalia and also for being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition.

The Honda motorcycle was recovered; it had been partially disassembled. It was stored pending release to the owner. The second motorcycle, a Yamaha, was also stored pending identification. It is believed to be an outstanding stolen with Bakersfield Police Department.

The LoJack® System was installed in the Honda CBR600 in July 2010 at Carter Powersports in Las Vegas, Nevada.
