The owner of a 2011 Ford Econoline van had rented the truck out to a customer so that they could conduct business. The rental was for one month. As it was coming close to the end of the rental period, the owner was trying to remind the renter that the rental period was going to end shortly. Numerous other attempts to make contact with the renter were made. Approximately 6 weeks after the expiration of the rental agreement, the owner decided to report the Ford stolen. They contacted the Lee County Sheriff’s Office to report their Ford stolen. The responding deputy prepared a stolen vehicle report, theft affidavit and had the vehicle’s information entered into the state and federal crime information computers.

Later that afternoon, while on routine patrol, a Lee County SO K-9 unit picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Econoline van on their on-board LoJack Police Tracking Computer (PTC). The deputy began tracking the stolen van by following the directional and audible cues on the PTC screen. The deputy, along with their backup, located the van in the 1300 block of Nuna Avenue. The deputies detained the occupants of the van. Contact was made with the owner, who advised that if the driver could pay for the overdue rental period, they could continue renting the truck. The driver could not pay the bill, so a representative of the company responded to remove the truck. The owner advised that they were going to withdraw the complaint and to pursue restitution through civil means. The van was recovered, and removed from state and federal crime information computer systems.

The LoJack® System was installed in the 2011 Ford Econoline van in October 2010.
