The owner of a 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo contacted the Richland County Sheriff’s Department to report that their vehicle was stolen while parked and locked at a friend’s apartment complex near the I-77/US 378 junction.  The owner had parked the Chevrolet early in the morning and the son awoke after lunch time to discover the vehicle missing.  There were no signs of glass breakage and no suspect or witness information known at the report time.

The Richland County SD verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Chevrolet.

Later in the evening a deputy from the Richland County SD on routine patrol duty picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Chevrolet with the LoJack Police Tracking Computers (PTC) that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft.  Following the directional and audible cues from the PTC, the deputy tracked the Chevrolet to an apartment complex near the junction of I-20/I-26, approximately twenty miles from the theft location.

The Chevrolet was occupied by three male subjects and observed being backed into a parking space.  Due to the timing and lack of backup, the deputy conducted a felony vehicle stop of the stolen Chevrolet.  The driver fled on foot but the two passengers were detained.  A K-9 unit responded but was unable to locate the driver.  Latent and DNA evidence was collected while the passengers were interviewed.  Only a street name of the driver was obtained.  Without an admission of guilt by the two passengers of having knowledge of the Chevrolet being stolen, one of the passengers was cited for a simple possession of marijuana; both were released pending further investigation.  The Chevrolet was towed and stored until the owner could take custody.

The LoJack® System was installed in the Chevrolet Monte Carlo in December 2006 at Tropical Chevrolet in Miami, Florida.
