The owner of a 2015 Honda CRV discovered that the vehicle had been stolen overnight in Center City Philadelphia. The Honda owner called 911 and the Philadelphia Police Department Radio dispatched a 6th District officer to investigate. The officer arrived on location, interviewed the complainant and searched the area for the Honda. When the officer was unable to locate the Honda, the officer prepared a stolen vehicle report and arranged to have the stolen vehicle information entered into the state and federal crime computers which automatically activated the LoJack® System concealed in the Honda CRV.
A short while later, an undercover officer from the Philadelphia Police Major Crimes Auto Squad was conducting an unrelated investigation in the eastern section of Philadelphia. The officer reported to police radio that the LoJack Police Tracking Computer in the unmarked police vehicle had activated indicating that a LoJack equipped stolen vehicle was in the area. Additional officers and a detective assigned to the Major Crimes Auto Squad converged on the area and a uniformed officer in a marked police vehicle observed the stolen Honda in the area of Hartville Street. The officer reported the situation to police radio and the detective assigned to the auto squad came to the officer’s assistance. The Honda was brought to a stop and the driver was placed under arrest. A passenger in the Honda ran from the scene but was confronted a short distance away by uniformed officers assigned to a marked police patrol wagon. The male subsequently crawled under the police wagon. Fearing for the males’ safety, the officers extracted the male and during a search subsequent to arrest, the officers discovered 15 packets of white powder secreted in the males groin area. Initial testing of the powder indicated positive to the presence of Heroin. Both males were placed under arrest and charged with violations of the Pennsylvania Crimes Code related to theft and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.
A detective assigned to the Major Crimes Auto Squad processed the arrests and the case remains under investigation by the members of the Philadelphia Police Major Crimes Auto Squad. The detective subsequently returned the undamaged Honda CRV to the owner and provided all pertinent information to same.
The LoJack® System was installed in the 2015 Honda CRV in April 2015 by Jim Coleman Honda in Maryland.
