The owner of a 2009 Mini Cooper 2-door coupe contacted the Miami-Dade Police Department to report their vehicle stolen. The responding officer prepared a stolen vehicle report, theft affidavit and had the vehicle’s information entered into the state and federal crime computers.

The next morning, a Miami-Dade Police Department officer picked up the silent LoJack signal from the stolen Mini Cooper on their on-board LoJack Police Tracking Computer (PTC). The PTC enables law enforcement officers to track, locate and recover stolen vehicles quickly and safely. The officer began tracking the stolen Mini by following the directional and audible cues on their PTC screen. The officer, along with their backup, located the Mini in a parking lot in the 12900 block of Bird Road. When they examined the vehicle identification number (VIN) and the license plate, it did not correspond with what was entered into the N.C.I.C. system. The officers immediately contacted their district auto theft unit, who responded to the scene.

The detectives contacted the victim to inquire into the theft of the Mini. The victim explained that about 6 months ago he observed that a tow truck was towing his Mini from his home and thought it was a “repo” truck. Since he was behind in his payments, he thought nothing of it except that his Mini was being “repo’ed.” He was contacted by the bank wanting either the Mini or the car payment. It was at that point he contacted the police to report the Mini stolen. The detectives confiscated the Mini and began an investigation to identify the Mini since there was another VIN on the Mini. The detectives believed there was something obscured with this case. Finally they were able to identify the Mini was the one reported stolen. The Mini was recovered and removed from federal and state crime computer systems.

The LoJack® System was installed in the 2009 Mini Cooper in June 2009 at Barman Mini in Palm Beach, Florida.
