It’s never a good idea to keep the spare keys for a vehicle inside another vehicle parked next to it. This practice makes it easier for a thief to steal your car, truck, motorcycle or van. Although the Myrtle Beach, NC residents in this case made this mistake, their stolen BMW X5 was protected with the LoJack® system. Local law enforcement, with assistance from LoJack, recovered the X5 the same day it was reported stolen, even though it was 200 miles away from its original location.

On May 22nd, 2014, the BMW’s owner contacted the Myrtle Beach Police Department to report the crime. Officers verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers. The LoJack unit concealed in the X5, which was installed at Braman BMW in West Palm Beach, FL, was then automatically activated.

Later the same morning, officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg, NC Police and the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles License and Theft Bureau picked up the silent homing signals from the stolen car on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. An NCDMW inspector located the BMW parked and unoccupied near an apartment building. After a brief surveillance, the undamaged X5 we retrieved and soon returned to its relieved owners.
