The owner of a GMC Safari made the mistake of leaving their minivan unlocked and unaccompanied with the keys still inside. It wasn’t long before a sharp-eyed thief discovered the situation and drove off in the vehicle. What this crook didn’t see was the LoJack® system, which was installed out of sight but still provided a homing signal for local police to find and recover the Safari and capture the suspect as well.

On May 3rd, 2014, the GMC’s owner contacted the Bell Gardens Police Department to report that their vehicle was stolen. Officers verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers. This procedure automatically activated the LoJack device concealed in the Safari, which was installed at Simi Valley Pontiac Buick GMC in Simi Valley, CA.

Less than 30 minutes later, officers from Bell PD and a Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department helicopter picked up the silent homing signals from the stolen minivan on their on-board LoJack tracking computers. The GMC was located near the intersection of Randolph Ave and Pine St., parked with the suspect inside. As officers approached, the suspect attempted to flee on foot but was quickly taken into custody. The retrieved Safari was soon returned to its thankful owners.
