The owner of a BMW 328i in Plantation, FL brought his vehicle to a repair shop on a recent Monday. The following Thursday, he returned to the business to check on his convertible, only to discover that it was missing! With assistance from the LoJack® system installed in the car, local law enforcement not only located it that same day, but busted a possible ‘chop shop’ operation as well.

On April 3rd, 2014, the BMW’s owner reported the crime to the Plantation Police Department. The responding officer prepared a stolen vehicle report and theft affidavit and had the vehicle’s information entered into the state and federal crime computers. This routine police procedure automatically activated the LoJack unit concealed in the 328i, which was installed at New Country Motor Cars in Hartford, CT.

A short while later, a Miami-Dade PD officer picked up the silent homing signal from the stolen car on the LoJack tracking computer installed in his patrol vehicle. The BMW was tracked to a motor vehicle recycling company in Opa Locka. The officer requested backup from a police aviation unit. The flight crew pinpointed the location of the car inside the business yard. The Miami-Dade Auto theft unit performed an ‘inspection’ and discovered several stolen engines as well as the 328i. The owner of the business was taken into custody. The convertible was retrieved and soon returned to its thankful owner.
