It might have been April Fool’s Day, but it was no joke when a Case 580N Backhoe was discovered missing from a construction site in Houston, TX. The machine was last seen when the workers left at the end of the previous workday. The company owners were no fools when it came to protecting their assets- they had a LoJack® system installed when they purchased the backhoe, so local police, assisted by LoJack, were able to recover it that same day.

On April 1st, 2014, the Case’s owners contacted the Houston Police Department to report that their machine was stolen. Officers verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers. This procedure automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the backhoe.

A short while later, officers from the Houston PD North Command picked up the homing signals from the stolen machine on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. The Case was located on an undeveloped parcel of land in the North Houston area. The undamaged backhoe was retrieved and soon returned to the job site.
