This case involves a 2013 Ford Econoline van rented from a home improvement store in Sunrise, FL. The customer failed to return the van after several requests from store management. The van was then reported stolen to police, which activated the LoJack® system installed inside the vehicle. With LoJack’s help, the Econoline was recovered in less than three and a half hours after activation.

On January 9th, 2014, store management contacted the Sunrise Police Department to report the crime. The responding officer prepared a stolen vehicle report and theft affidavit and had the vehicle’s information entered into the state and federal crime computers. This routine police procedure automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the Econoline van.

Later that morning, a Broward County Sheriff’s Office deputy picked up the homing signal from the stolen van on the LoJack tracking computer installed in his patrol vehicle. The deputy located the vehicle driving along Commercial Boulevard and performed a traffic stop. The driver, who was the rental customer, was taken into custody. The Econoline was retrieved and quickly returned to the retail location.
