When the owner of a Cadillac Escalade in California entered a convenience store late one recent Thursday night, leaving his SUV parked, unlocked and running, he made a big mistake, creating a prime opportunity for a thief to steal his vehicle. One thing this victim did right was to have the LoJack® system installed when he bought his Caddy. With LoJack’s assistance, local police were able to recover the Escalade in less than three hours after activation.

On February 13th, 2014, the Cadillac’s owner contacted the Orange County Sheriff’s Department to report his vehicle stolen.  Deputies verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers. This procedure automatically activated the LoJack device concealed in the Escalade, which was installed at Costa Mesa GMC Pontiac Buick in Costa Mesa, CA.

Just a few minutes later, officers from several police agencies, including Anaheim PD’s airship, picked up the homing signals from the stolen SUV with the LoJack tracking computers that are installed in patrol vehicles and aircraft.  The flight crew requested assistance from California Highway Patrol.  Both air and ground crews followed the vehicle to Long Beach, where Long Beach PD took over. After a brief pursuit, the Caddy ran out of gas and stopped. The driver was taken into custody, and the Escalade was retrieved and soon returned to its thankful owner.
