In this case a rented 2013 John Deere XUV 550 crossover utility vehicle was stolen from a highway project site in North Carolina. The national equipment rental company that owned the machine was well aware of the large market for stolen construction equipment, which is why they chose to protect their asset with the LoJack® system. With LoJack’s help, local police were able to recover the UTV along with some other stolen machines.

On February 27th, 2014, the construction contractor contacted the Wake County Sheriff Office to report the crime. Deputies verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers, which automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the John Deere.

A short while later, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office helicopter picked up the homing signal from the stolen UTV with its onboard LoJack tracking computer.  The flight crew directed Wake County deputies to a small farm outside of Garner, NC.  The John Deere was found in an aluminum enclosed trailer on the property along with a stolen utility trailer and a stolen zero turn mower. The undamaged XUV 550 was retrieved and soon returned to the job site. The total recovery value was $27,000.
