The owner of a 2010 John Deere 310 Backhoe was extremely upset to discover it missing from a job site on a recent Wednesday afternoon. It’s a good thing that this machine, valued at over $75,000, had the LoJack® system installed when it was purchased. Local police, assisted by LoJack, were able to recover the backhoe later that same day.

On February 19th, 2014, the John Deere’s owner contacted the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department to report that their unit was stolen. Officers verified the theft and entered the backhoe information into the state and federal crime computers. This procedure automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the backhoe.

Later that day, detectives from the Washington Area Vehicle Enforcement team (WAVE) picked up the homing signals from the stolen machine on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. The detectives found the backhoe near the intersection of Viceroy Street and Grafton Drive in District Heights, MD, where it was found parked and abandoned on a vacant lot. The John Deere was retrieved and soon returned to the construction company.
