This case involves a Volvo XC9 purchased at a Colorado used car dealer with a fake ID and fraudulent financial information. The LoJack® system installed in the stolen SUV proved to be the thief’s downfall. With LoJack’s help, police in Illinois, over a thousand miles away from the original location, recovered the XC9 safely and returned it to the dealer.

On January 13th, 2014, the dealership contacted the Colorado Springs Police Department to report the crime. Officers verified the theft and entered the vehicle into NCIC, state and federal crime computers. The LoJack unit concealed in the XC9 was then automatically activated.

A short while later, an Illinois State Police (ISP) airship received the homing signal from the stolen SUV on its onboard LoJack tracking computer. The flight crew requested ground assistance from the ISP State and Local Auto Theft Enforcement (SLATE) task force and Bloomington Police. The Volvo was located on Maple Street in Bloomington, where it was parked and unoccupied.  The undamaged XC9 was retrieved without incident and the police investigation continues.
