During cold weather months, it’s common for drivers to start up their vehicles and then leave them running and unattended to ‘warm up’. Unfortunately, thieves are on the lookout for these unlocked machines as an easy score. Even when a car, truck or van is stolen with its own key, the LoJack® system can still help police track down and recover the vehicle.

On December 4th, 2013, the owner of a BMW X5 contacted the East Orange, NJ Police Department to report that his car had been stolen after he started the car and went back into his house. Officers verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers. This procedure automatically activated the LoJack unit concealed in the X5, which was installed at BMW of Bloomfield, NJ.

A short time later, a patrol officer from the Orange PD picked up the homing signals coming from the stolen car on the LoJack tracking computer installed in his patrol vehicle. The officer tracked the BMW to a nearby housing project where it was found parked and abandoned. The undamaged X5 was soon returned to its thankful owner.
