One of the most common ways for a thief to avoid being caught with a stolen vehicle is to change the license plates. A similar but more complicated move is to also change the VIN (vehicle identification number) which is on a small metal plate on or inside the machine. Although these actions might foil a visual search, they have no effect on the LoJack® system, which sends a homing signal to help police track down stolen cars, trucks, vans or motorcycles no matter how the thief changes the outward appearance.

On November 3rd, 2013, the owner of a 2010 Toyota Corolla exited a Dallas, TX nightclub just after 2:30 am, and found his car missing from the parking lot. He immediately contacted the Dallas Police. Officers verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers. This action automatically activated the LoJack device concealed in the Corolla, which was installed at Jim McNatt Toyota in Denton, TX.

A short while later, officers from the Denton PD picked up the homing signals from the stolen car on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. The officers found the Toyota being driven in the downtown area and performed a traffic stop. The driver claimed to have purchased the car but had no proof. Police believe that they may have uncovered a major auto theft ring.  This investigation is ongoing with arrest warrants pending.  The Corolla was recovered and soon returned to its grateful owner.
