Many automotive dealers install the LoJack® system on most or all of the vehicles they sell- not only as a benefit to their clients, but also to protect them in case some steals from the business, as in this case where a key is swiped and a 2010 Acura MDX is stolen right off the lot.

On September 22nd, 2013, the dealership owner contacted the NYPD 114th precinct to report the crime. Officers verified the theft and entered the vehicle’s information into the NYPD stolen vehicle computer and the NCIC national stolen vehicle system. This procedure activated the LoJack unit concealed in the MDX.

Within a short period of time, members of the 79th precinct in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, picked up the homing signal from the stolen SUV on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. They tracked the Acura to a residential street, where it was parked and abandoned with a stolen Florida license plate, which may have deterred a visual search, but did not fool the LoJack system. After a brief surveillance, police recovered the MDX and soon returned it to the relieved dealership. The owner of the dealership was ecstatic that the car was in excellent condition, and further stated that they were grateful that they had installed LoJack on the vehicle.
