Be careful who you lend your vehicle to. This lesson was learned the hard way by the victim in this case. She loaned her BMW X3 to her boyfriend’s sister, who first refused to return it, then claimed she never borrowed it, and finally admitted she had given the X3 to one of her brother’s friends at her brother’s request. Despite all these complications, the LoJack® system installed in the SUV made it easy for four branches of local law enforcement to combine forces and recover the stolen vehicle.
On August 12th, 2013, the BMW’s owner contacted the Broward County Sheriff’s Office to report her SUV stolen. The responding officer prepared a stolen vehicle report and had the vehicle’s information entered into the state and federal crime computers. This action automatically activated the LoJack unit concealed in the X3, which was installed at Braman Audi in West Palm Beach, FL.
A short time later, a Margate police officer picked up the homing signal from the BMW on the LoJack tracking computer installed in his patrol vehicle. The officer began tracking the stolen vehicle and was soon joined by officers from the Florida Highway Patrol, Plantation PD, and Palm Beach Gardens PD. The officers located the vehicle abandoned in a parking lot of a townhouse complex in Plantation. The undamaged X3 was soon returned to its relieved owner.
