A North Carolina rental company is the victim in this case, when a customer neglects to return a leased Freightliner box truck. The company’s owners were smart enough to protect their asset by having the LoJack® system installed on the vehicle, so local police were able to recover it quickly.

On July 5th, 2013, the rental company owner contacted the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) to report that the truck had been rented but not returned. CMPD verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers. This automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the Freightliner, which was installed at a large national rental company.

A short while later, officers from Mooresville Police picked up the homing signals from the Freightliner on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. The officers tracked the truck to a downtown commercial business district, where it was found parked and abandoned behind a vacant office/warehouse building. The undamaged Freightliner was soon returned to the grateful rental company.
