This case involves a Caterpillar 420D Backhoe Loader stolen from a construction site. A Nevada Highway Patrol trooper, assisted by the LoJack® system, was able to recover it in a most unusual hiding place.

The Caterpillar’s owner contacted the North Las Vegas Police, where a report was filed. After verifying the theft, NLVP entered the equipment information into the NCIC Stolen Vehicle System. This automatically activated the hidden LoJack transponder, which was installed at Cashman Equipment of Las Vegas, NV.

A short while later, a Trooper with the Nevada Highway Patrol began picking up the homing signal from the backhoe on the LoJack tracking computer installed in his patrol vehicle. He followed the signal from the highway to the desert, and finally located the machine concealed at the bottom of a large sand and gravel pit, which kept the backhoe from view but didn’t keep the LoJack system from activating. The undamaged Caterpillar was recovered and soon returned to its relieved owner.
