This case involves a Melroe Skid Steer Loader which is stolen from a construction site and found hidden in a forest. You may wonder why a thief would go to the trouble of stealing a machine, only to hide it away. This is because criminals are aware of the LoJack® system and how it helps police track down stolen vehicles. They can’t see the LoJack on the equipment so they hide it and see if the police track it down, as they did in this instance.

On July 20th, 2013, the Skid Steer’s owner contacted the Harris County, TX Precinct Pct. 5 Constable’s office and reported the machine missing. Harris County Constable’s Department verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the State and Federal crime computers, which automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the loader, which was installed at WW Webber in Houston, TX.

A short while later, Texas DPS State Police Patrol helicopter Idaho 11 picked up the homing signals from the Melroe on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol airship. The officers tracked the signal to a heavily wooded large partial of land in Eastern Harris County. Ground officers were directed to the location and recovered the Skid Steer, which was soon returned to its relieved owner.
