It’s a good idea to have a spare key for your vehicle in case you lose the original key. Not such a good idea- keeping the spare key inside the vehicle itself. A thief who may just have been planning to steal the contents of your car, truck, van or motorcycle would then have the means to take the whole thing, quickly and easily. The New Orleans, LA resident in this case had his Toyota Tundra stolen with the spare key stored in his center console, but his local police, working with the LoJack® system, were able to recover it in less than two hours.

On June 24th, 2013, the Toyota’s owner contacted the New Orleans Police to report his Tundra was stolen from his residence. Officers verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers. This automatically activated the LoJack transponder concealed in the Toyota, which was installed at Lakeside Toyota in Metairie, LA.

A short while later, a New Orleans officer picked up the homing signals from the Toyota on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. The officer tracked the vehicle as it was driven around the city. He summoned backup and stopped the Tundra. The driver and a passenger attempted to escape, but both were apprehended and taken into custody. The undamaged truck was soon returned to its relieved owner.
