When a rented piece of construction equipment is stolen, it has an adverse effect on both the workers who leased the machine and are unable to complete the job they are working on, as well as the rental company who cannot receive income for an asset that’s missing. The Houston, TX based equipment leasing business in this case was smart enough to install the LoJack® system on their 2012 Case backhoe, so local law enforcement recovered it the same day the theft was reported.

On July 16th, 2013, the rental store manager contacted the Houston Police Department and reported the backhoe was stolen from a job site. Houston PD verified the theft and entered the machine’s information into the state and federal crime computers. The LoJack device concealed in the backhoe, which was installed at a large national equipment rental company, was then automatically activated.

A short while later, officers from Houston PD Central Patrol picked up the homing signals from the backhoe on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. The officers tracked the machine to a wooded area near the intersection of Cavalcade and Collingsworth where it was hidden in a grove of trees. The Case was recovered and soon returned to the relieved rental company.
