The victim in this case was smart enough not to keep the keys to his 2012 Toyota Tundra inside his vehicle. Unfortunately, he left the Tundra’s keys in another vehicle that was parked in the same area. Thieves broke into the other car, found the Toyota’s keys, and drove away in his truck. There was one factor in this victim’s favor- he had the LoJack® system installed when he purchased his Tundra- so local law enforcement had a leg-up on the thief and were able to track it down in just one hour and 18 minutes after activation.

The Toyota’s owner immediately reported the theft to the Sacramento Police, who entered the vehicle information into the California Stolen Vehicle System as well as the national system, NCIC. This routine police action automatically activated the LoJack unit concealed in the truck, which was installed at Melody Toyota in San Bruno, CA.

A short time later, air officers with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Aviation Unit, began to receive the homing signal emitting from the Toyota on their on-board LoJack tracking computer. The officers then alerted ground units and officers with the Elk Grove PD and Sacramento PD began tracking the car as well. The officers located the Tundra parked at the curb near the intersection of Sebastiani Way and Grand Cru Drive in Elk Grove. The vehicle was abandoned and appeared undamaged. The Toyota, valued at $26,750, was soon returned to its very grateful owner.
