This case involves a Chicago, IL resident who left the house after breakfast to discover his Toyota Corolla gone from where he had parked it the previous evening. What the thief didn’t know is that the stolen car had a LoJack® system installed, so Illinois State Police (ISP) were able to retrieve the vehicle by lunchtime that same day!

On May 23rd, 2013, the Corolla’s owner discovered his vehicle missing and contacted police. Chicago PD verified the theft and entered the car’s VIN (vehicle identification number) into their state and federal crime computers. The LoJack device concealed in the Corolla, which was installed to Libertyville Toyota in Libertyville, IL, was then automatically activated.

A short while later, an ISP trooper began picking up the homing signals from the Toyota on the LoJack tracking computer installed in his patrol vehicle. The trooper tracked the vehicle to the southeast side of Chicago near 84th and Escanaba, where he found the car parked and unoccupied. The undamaged Corolla was soon returned to its relieved owner.
