If you look at auto theft trend reports, you can see that certain vehicles are very popular with car thieves. Why? Usually these are the same cars favored by buyers, meaning there is a big market for their parts with illegal ‘chop shops’. In this case, two Acura RSX sedans were stolen from the same New Jersey Park and Ride lot in the space of four hours. Both cars had something else in common- they were each equipped with the LoJack® system so law enforcement was able to track them down fast and get them back where they belong.

On May 16th, 2013, the first RSX owner contacted Wayne, NJ police to report that her vehicle had been stolen. She told police that she parked her car at the Park and Ride parking lot at the Willowbrook Mall and took a bus to New York City. When she returned a little after 10 pm, her car was missing.

The Wayne PD verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into their state and federal crime computers. This automatically activated the LoJack device concealed in her RSX, which was installed at Montclair Acura DCH Leasing in Verona, NJ.

Just a few hours later, Wayne PD officers responded to a second stolen vehicle notification from the same Park and Ride lot for the same make and model of vehicle, an Acura RSX, and the same scenario- the owner had parked at the lot, taken a bus into NYC, and returned just before 2 am to find his car missing. This car also had a LoJack unit installed, at Universal Toyota in San Antonio, TX, which was also automatically activated once Wayne PD verified the theft and entered the car’s information into their computer.

A short time later, a patrol officer from the Essex County Sheriff’s Department picked up the homing signals coming from both of the stolen Acuras on the LoJack tracking computer installed in his patrol vehicle. The officer tracked the vehicles to a hospital parking garage, where they were parked along with a third stolen vehicle. Both undamaged RSXs were soon returned to their relieved and happy owners.
