In this case, the owner of a Volkswagen Touareg had his keys stolen from his backpack, and later, his car was taken as well. The thief also took something else when stealing the VW- the LoJack® system, which sent out a homing signal to help law enforcement track down both the vehicle and the low life who stole it.

On May 1st, 2013, the owner of a Volkswagen Touareg contacted the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department to report that his vehicle had been stolen from Oceanside.  SDCSD verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into their state and federal crime computers. This automatically activated the LoJack unit concealed in the Volkswagen, which was installed at Bob Baker Volkswagen in Carlsbad, CA.

A short while later, deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff Encinitas Station picked up the homing signals from the stolen VW on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles.  The deputies tracked the vehicle to Encinitas, where they saw a male taking property from inside the car.  He gave deputies the name of the person who stole the VW’s keys from a backpack and later took the car; a warrant was issued for that person’s arrest. The Touareg’s owner was very happy when his vehicle was recovered undamaged.
