When we examine details from the stolen vehicle cases featured on this blog, we often get valuable advice on what NOT to do. Today’s lesson is- Don’t leave your vehicle’s spare key inside the vehicle. Someone may break into your car planning to steal whatever valuables you have stored inside, but could end up taking your car instead!

On May 13th, 2013 the owner of a 2006 Nissan Sentra contacted the 110 precinct NYPD, Corona Queens NY, to report that her vehicle was stolen from her Corona residence. The officers entered the car’s information into their NYPD stolen vehicle computer. The LoJack® unit concealed in the Sentra, which was installed at Koeppel Nissan in Jackson Heights, NY, was then automatically activated.

A short while later, officers from the Queens North Auto Larceny Unit picked up the homing signal from the Sentra with the LoJack tracking computers in their patrol vehicles. They located the vehicle traveling in Astoria, Queens, occupied by four youths. Police stopped the car and arrested the occupants. The undamaged Nissan was soon returned to its elated owner, who later told authorities that she had a spare key concealed in the glove box and the thieves apparently used it to take her car.
