The LoJack® System is a great tool for police to use to track stolen vehicles, and often find the thieves who took them. In this case, the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police track down two criminals who robbed a victim’s home at gunpoint and stole his 2009 Dodge Challenger as well.

On May 4th, 2013, the Dodge’s owner contacted the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department to report an armed robbery at his Washington, DC residence. The thieves took numerous personal, including the victim’s car keys and his car. DC Metro police verified the theft and entered the vehicle information into the state and federal crime computers. This automatically activated the LoJack unit concealed in the Dodge, which was installed at Stafford Dodge in Springfield, VA.

Within a short while, DC Metro officers picked up the homing signals from the Challenger on the LoJack tracking computers installed in their patrol vehicles. They tracked the vehicle to 57th Street NE in Washington, DC. Officers observed the stolen car and two people standing near it. Both were arrested and one had the Challenger’s keys in his pocket. In the brief time the suspects had the car in their possession, they had removed the DC registration tags and replaced them with fraudulent paper Virginia temporary tags. The inspection stickers from the windshield had also been removed in an attempt to conceal the true vehicle identity- measures that may fool the naked eye, but not the LoJack system! One suspect also had outstanding arrest warrants for auto theft. The Dodge was soon returned to its grateful owner.
