Auto thieves will often try tricky driving maneuvers to avoid being apprehended. The suspect in this case drove all over Brooklyn in an attempt to elude police, but the LoJack® System helped law enforcement know where the car was even when they couldn’t see it.

On April 22, 2013, the owner of a KIA Optima contacted the 78th police precinct in West Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY, to report that his car was stolen from his residence.  The officer entered the car’s VIN (vehicle identification number) into the NYPD stolen auto computer.  This automatically activated the vehicle’s LoJack unit, which was installed at Enterprise Auto Sales in New Rochelle, NY.

A short while later, officers from the Brooklyn South Auto Larceny Unit picked up the homing signal from the KIA on the LoJack tracking computer installed in their patrol vehicle. The officers tracked the vehicle as it was being driven through various sections of Brooklyn.  Eventually the suspect parked the car and the officers apprehended him. Police later determined that the thief had broken into the car and found the spare keys in its console. The Optima was undamaged and quickly returned to its elated owner, who stated that it was well worth the money he spent for the LoJack system when he purchased his vehicle.
