Recently, a paving company owner in Florida had the unfortunate luck to have a John Deere backhoe stolen from his storage yard, along with a tractor, trailer and skid skeer loader that were all connected. This victim did have one bit of good luck going for him as well- he had the LoJack® system installed on the skid steer, allowing his local police to quickly track down and return his equipment.

On Sunday morning, April 21st, 2013, a male entered the storage yard of a paving company and stole a tractor/trailer containing a 2008 John Deere 310-S combination front-end loader/backhoe. Later that afternoon, the owner of the equipment contacted the Miami-Dade Police Department to report the theft. The responding officer entered the vehicle’s information entered into their state and federal crime computers. This procedure automatically activated the LoJack unit concealed in the John Deere.

A short while later, a Miami-Dade PD officer picked up the silent LoJack homing signal from the backhoe on the LoJack tracking computer installed in their patrol vehicle. The officer observed the vehicle driving south on LeJeune Road in front of Miami International Airport and requested backup. A Miami-Dade PD aviation unit responded, and the ground officers pulled the driver over, taking him into custody after a brief chase. The John Deere backhoe, along with the tractor/trailer carrying it and a skid steer loader also attached to the trailer, were all soon returned to their owner.
